WHEN I COME AROUND, I’m as stiff as fuck. My whole body feels like it’s been in combat. Smacking my tongue around the inside of my mouth, I search for moisture and notice a metallic taste in its place. Odd. Did I bite my tongue in my sleep? My eyes flicker open and I see a lattice of tubes following the curve of the ceiling. This is not my cabin. Lifting my head, I look down the length of my body until my eyes settle on a med stick protruding at an angle from my lower stomach. I drop my head back down.

Ugh. Now I remember.

Gritting my teeth and letting my anger express with a growl, I yank out the med stick and fling it across the floor as I sit up. It all but implodes as it crashes against a plant holder. Craning my neck, I search the garden chamber for Vi as I get to my feet. Of course she’s not here. The chamber is dimly lit from lack of motion. The sensor must have dimmed the lighting as soon as she left. Was I expecting to see her pottering around, working silently in the background, waiting for me to regain consciousness?

Pushing up into a sitting position triggers the room’s lighting to get brighter.

“Pika, what Earth time is it?”

Earth time is precisely 19:46:46 and counting Captain Xycho.

I squeeze my eyes tight and blink a few times making a big O with my mouth, moving my jaw from side to side trying to rid myself of the last dregs of medication which is just starting to filter out of my bloodstream. My hands are half-numb but buzzing as blood rushes back into them. I shake them in front of me to quicken the transition.
